History of SuperValu & TidyTowns
SuperValu is part of the Musgrave Group, Ireland’s largest grocery and food distributor. With 222 stores throughout Ireland, SuperValu has served the people of Ireland for over 30 years. Along the way, we have become a well-established landmark across Irish communities.
This reputation has been earned through our fresh food quality, strong value offering, consistent support of local producers and the expertise and customer service across our stores. Our heritage as an Irish business is of huge importance to us and along with our retail partners, is at the cornerstone of everything we do and love.
TidyTowns has come a long way since its inception in the 1950’s and we know it will continue to build great community spirit, excitement and goodwill for many years to come. SuperValu has played a large part in this success.
At SuperValu, we pride ourselves on being at the heart of local communities all over Ireland. Our stores around the country serve not just as shops, but as places where neighbours can meet, talk and exchange news. That’s why it is a source of such pride to us that we have been associated with this competition for 26 years.
SuperValu retailers both live and work in the communities in which they operate and make a huge investment at local level. This is the reason why we first got involved in the TidyTowns competition and why we have worked with the Department over many years. We strive to continually build and invigorate the competition, making it Ireland’s leading community initiative.
In addition to this, SuperValu has supported the competition at a grass roots level by investing additional time, money and resources in their local TidyTowns committees. As a result, we have great memories of the competition over the past 25 years.
Ireland in 1992 was very different. It was a meeker, quieter, more inward looking place and there were only the stirrings of a national pride that would ultimately blossom into an international identity on a local and global level.
SuperValu TidyTowns was instrumental in bringing people together at a local level to take pride in their locality, encouraging people to work together to aspire to be the best community in the country. Competition brings out the best in us. SuperValu TidyTowns went from small localised committee-focused groups, to national obsession.
