17.07.12 - The Golden Mile Competition 2012
Galway County Council is inviting communities to enter the Golden Mile Competition 2012.
The competition is aimed at community and TidyTowns groups, schools, individuals and farmers, to encourage people of all ages and interests, who wish to enhance and enjoy the built and natural heritage of the county.
Awards will be given for:
- Overall award : Perpetual trophy
- The mile showing best potential
- Best natural heritage mile
- Best built heritage mile
- The safest mile
- The Tony Dervan RIP, award for best community effort (to include litter management)
- Primary Schools
Groups are free to select any mile of country road that they wish to enter in the competition, highlighting areas of natural and historical interest.
To achieve a good overall score, the mile selected should contain a wide variety of features such as stone walls, hedges, old gates etc. The mile should try to reflect the general character of the area.
The closing date for entries is Friday 3rd August at 4pm. Judging will take place in early October, with an awards ceremony in December.
