Killarney wins Best Kept Town 2010

Killarney, County Kerry is the overall winner of Ireland’s Best Kept Town competition, 2010. The results were announced this week at an awards ceremony in Queen’s University, Belfast.

Killarney also won the Best Kept Large Town category. Coleraine, County Derry won the Best Kept Large Urban Centre category, Abbeyshrule, County Longford won the Best Kept Village Category and Broughshane, County Antrim won the Best Kept Small Town category.

Ms Doreen Muskett, MBE, President of the Northern Ireland Amenity Council, added “The Best Kept Awards in Northern Ireland and the TidyTowns competition in the South, both sponsored by SuperValu, encourage local people to promote sustainability and improve their townscapes for everyone, including future generations. The all-Ireland awards give communities the opportunity to build new links and develop a wider exchange of ideas and environmental best practice.”

Ms. Christine Grant, Marketing Director, Musgrave Retail Partners NI said: "SuperValu north and south of the border is very proud to sponsor the Best Kept Awards schemes.  These partnerships are part of a wider corporate social responsibility strategy that aims to support local communities in which SuperValu retailers trade. Retailers are keen to support this project, because they believe it makes a real difference to the environment and the well-being of local people throughout the island. On behalf of all our SuperValu partners I'd like to congratulate the winners."

The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and the Northern Ireland Amenity Council initiated the Ireland’s Best Kept Towns competition in 1995 to help raise the profile of both the TidyTowns and Northern Ireland's "Best Kept" competitions, and so help to improve the standard of towns and villages across the island of Ireland.

All entrants were marked against strict adjudication criteria that included cleanliness, the outward appearance of buildings, the presentation of roads and public facilities and the natural environment.
