IBAL Litter League Results

In the 2009 survey of litter levels in 60 towns and cities by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL), Bray pipped Cavan as the overall winner of the league for 2009. Both were among a record number of towns (39 towns) to be classed as “litter-free”.

The winning town was presented with a special plaque from Dr Tom Cavanagh, Chairman of IBAL.

An Taisce, who conduct the litter surveys, commented - “Bray has done exceptionally well – the overall presentation of the Main Street speaks volumes – clearly big efforts are being made to encourage people to ‘Shop Local’ and a very attractive environment has been provided. Paving /bins / planting etc. were all in excellent condition and the area was spotless. The Promenade was immaculate – it wasn’t just clear of litter but in
impeccable condition.”

While often confused in the media with TidyTowns, the Anti-litter league is in fact a separate anti-litter campaign run by the Irish Business Against Litter organisation. Established in 1996, IBAL’s membership includes top Irish business and commercial enterprise and is co-sponsored by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government.

IBAL believe that continued economic success – especially in areas of tourism,
food and direct foreign investment - depends on a clean litter free environment.

With TidyTowns having a much broader focus than litter, it is not surprising that overall results will differ somewhat, however litter still poses an ongoing challenge to most TidyTowns participants. The TidyTowns Unit would therefore like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those involved in improving their areas in the latest survey.
