Get Ireland Active is an initiative by the Health Service Executive (HSE), which encourages the public to get up, get out and get active.

Getting out and being active is a great way to keep healthy as well as having a positive effect on your mood and wellbeing

It is extremely important for all age groups to get regular exercise to maintain a healthy heart and ultimately feel great.

Here are the benefits of being active for children, adults and the elderly:

Children

Four out of five children in Ireland are not getting enough exercise.

Some of the health benefits for children engaging in regular physical activity include:

•    Improved agility, balance and co-ordination

•    A happier feeling, hence reducing stress, anxiety and depression

•    Helping to maintain a healthy weight

•    Improved concentration

•    Helps to develop friendships
Adults

Just one in three Irish adults are active on a daily basis.

•    Reduced risk of developing chronic diseases

•    Improved quality of sleep

•    Builds muscle tone

Elderly

People who are active have a lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and other illnesses.

•    Helps reduce the risk of falls
•    Helps maintain healthy bones, joints and muscles
•    Helps improve balance and co-ordination
